Anticipated November Election as Independents Gain Momentum
Ivan Yates Predicts Political Shift in Ireland Amidst Declining Green and Major Party Support
Former Fine Gael minister Ivan Yates has forecasted that Ireland will see a general election before the end of the year, likely taking place in November.
Speaking on Newstalk FM's Anton Savage Show, Yates highlighted that upcoming local elections could result in significant losses for both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, with voter sentiment leaning towards Independents, who may secure up to 300 of the 949 council seats.
Recent polls underline this trend, showing Independents at 23% support, while Sinn Féin experienced a notable drop to 22%.
Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil saw minor increases, standing at 22% and 17%, respectively.
The Green Party, currently polling at 4%, faces possible 'wipeout,' with predictions of losing both their MEPs.
Yates remarked on the fragmented political landscape compared to more stable years of growth and recovery, citing factors such as the pandemic, increased living costs due to the Ukrainian crisis, and Brexit's recession impact on neighboring UK.
These dynamics make the anticipated elections particularly significant, potentially heralding a new political chapter in Ireland.
