Cabinet to Approve Legislation Citing Environmental and Public Health Concerns
Plans to ban disposable and flavored vapes in Ireland are expected to be approved by the Cabinet.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly is set to receive government backing to draft laws prohibiting the sale, manufacture, and import of single-use e-cigarettes.
The decision is motivated by environmental and health concerns, particularly regarding the nicotine levels these products contain and their ineffectiveness as smoking cessation tools.
Disposable vapes, often seen as affordable and impulse purchases, are criticized for being littered improperly and leading to environmental damage, disproportionately affecting younger people.
The proposed legislation will also ban flavored nicotine products, which are said to appeal to minors, and restrict packaging aimed at young individuals.
Minister Donnelly will additionally update the Cabinet on the expected increase in the number of General Practitioners in Ireland, attributing this to an 80% rise in training placements.
In other Cabinet matters, Enterprise Minister Peter Burke will introduce a mandate for government decisions to undergo an impact assessment on small and medium enterprises.
Finance Minister Jack Chambers will update on the state's investment plans, and Tánaiste Micheál Martin will discuss Middle East tensions and peacekeeping efforts.
Furthermore, the North South Ministerial Council meeting in Dublin will address infrastructure projects and cooperation between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
