Murphy and Shortall step down to pave the way for new leadership, highlighting their legacy and commitment to a social democratic future.
Former co-leaders of the Social Democrats Catherine Murphy and Roisin Shortall have announced they are not contesting the next general election.

The pair made the announcement this morning saying it was time for a new generation to take over.

Ms Murphy expressed her deep passion for addressing pressing social, environmental, economic, and governmental issues and noted the privilege of representing her constituents in Kildare North.

She emphasized her ongoing support for Holly Cairns and new leaders advocating for a social democratic future.

Ms Shortall reflected on her 32-year career as a TD for Dublin North West, highlighting her dedication to public service and belief in politics as a force for good.

She aimed to create a fairer and more progressive country through her work.

Social Democrats leader Holly Carins praised them as trailblazers, crediting them with inspiring her and others to pursue politics.

She affirmed the party's growth and potential as Murphy and Shortall transition from frontline politics.

Their departure marks the end of an era as they leave behind a party with strong roots and promising prospects in the upcoming general election.
