Leinster Coach Urges Improvement Ahead of Champions Cup Resumption

Leinster Coach Urges Improvement Ahead of Champions Cup Resumption

Leo Cullen emphasizes the need for greater coherence and performance as Leinster gears up for upcoming European and domestic challenges.
Leinster head coach Leo Cullen acknowledges that the province needs to improve before the Champions Cup returns in January.

Over the last two weekends, the Irish provinces have had a lackluster start in the Champions Cup.

Munster initially triumphed over Stade Francais, followed by a disappointing defeat to Castres.

Ulster, having rested key players, suffered heavy losses against Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Leinster, though the only team to secure two victories, struggled significantly in both games.

Their most recent home win against Clermont Auvergne highlighted offensive and lineout challenges, despite a strong defensive showing.

Cullen admits Leinster is not yet at its desired level and attributes the lack of cohesion to logistical challenges, including player rotations due to international duties.

He emphasizes the necessity of player management as the United Rugby Championship returns, with a match against Connacht on the horizon, followed by fixtures versus Munster, La Rochelle, and Bath.

Cullen acknowledges player frustration over selections and stresses the importance of maximizing opportunities.

He admits tactical errors, stemming from players’ desire to push boundaries, reflect wider issues seen in November's international games.

Despite these challenges, Cullen remains optimistic about the future, focusing on continuous improvement.
