Rory Hearne Selected as Social Democrats Candidate in Dublin North-West
Housing Campaigner Rory Hearne Aims to Succeed Retiring Róisín Shortall in Upcoming General Election
Renowned housing advocate Rory Hearne has been chosen as the Social Democrats' candidate for the general election in Dublin North-West.
This follows the announcement by Róisín Shortall, a co-founder of the party and a long-standing Dáil representative for the area since 1992, that she will retire and not contest the next election.
Hearne, an associate professor at Maynooth University with a history of political engagement, including a recent candidacy in the European elections for the Midlands-North West, was confirmed as the nominee at a party convention at the Skylon Hotel, Drumcondra, on July 25.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Hearne committed to maintaining the seat held by Shortall and acknowledged the substantial challenge of continuing her legacy.
A resident and father on Dublin’s northside, he emphasized his awareness of local issues, particularly the housing crisis, voicing concern over the plight of children living in homelessness.
Highlighting his belief in the Social Democrats' commitment to addressing Ireland's critical challenges, Hearne vowed to ensure robust representation for Dublin North-West in the Dáil.
Shortall endorsed his candidacy, appealing to her constituents to support Hearne, whom she described as a capable successor sharing her dedication to public service improvements, including affordable housing.
Her admiration for his advocacy was evident as she praised his efforts and foresight regarding housing and social equity.
She expressed her intention to actively support his campaign in the forthcoming general election.
